Intelligent Media Processing Laboratory

The Intelligent Media Processing Laboratory (IMPL) supports research into algorithms and architectures for processing digital multimedia data.  Some specific areas of interest are:

  • Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) for processing images, video, speech and text
  • Computer vision
  • Video enhancement and compression
  • Active noise cancellation

The IMPL is well outfitted, and includes the following equipment:

  • Linux compute servers
    • Ubuntu 16.04 on 32-core Xeon with hyperthreading, 128 GB RAM, 8 TB HDD, 500 GB solid-state drive
    • Dual nVidia GTX 1080 Ti’s provide supercomputing performance, over 22 TFLOPs peak throughout
      • Supports interactive exploration of deep convolutional neural networks
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on 12-core Xeon with hyperthreading, 32 GB RAM, 6 TB internal HDD, 8 TB external HDD
      • Supports chip design via tools for Electronic Design Automation (EDA)
      • Supports massively parallel execution of computationally complex algorithms
  • LG Electronics 55EG9600 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Curved Smart OLED TV
    • Wide gamut, high accuracy, state-of-the-art display
  • HiMedia Q10 quad-core media player
    • Supports playback of 4K streams compressed via MPEG-2/4, H.264, HEVC/H.265, WMV, AVI, MOV
  • ChromaATE Display Color Analyzer Model 7123
    • Allows measurement of display light emission – “color” and intensity
  • Electronic microscope for nano-imaging
